TRIPOLI (Agencies) - His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday took part in celebrations here marking the 40th anniversary of Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi's accession to power.

His Majesty, who was received by Qadhafi at the airport, congratulated the Libyan leader on the occasion.

Qadhafi held an iftar banquet in honour of King Abdullah and the visiting delegations.

The celebrations were attended by several leaders from around the world.

The King and the delegations participating in the celebrations observed several military parades on the occasion.

Later on Tuesday, Qadhafi and his guests were due to watch a military parade comprising units of African, Arab and European troops, according to Agence France-Presse.

The city's streets have been decked with thousands of multicoloured lights, and hundreds of Qadhafi portraits and placards paying tribute to the leader, AFP reported.
