AMMAN — Almost 7,000 Syrian students are enrolled in Jordanian higher education institutions for the 2018/2019 academic year, Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities (AARU) Amr Salama said on Sunday.

In a press statement, carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Salama said that AARU has implemented a special project to support the education of Syrian students in Lebanon, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Jordan, funded by the European Commission in cooperation with Turkey, Germany and Mediterranean Universities Union.

He added that the project, implemented in cooperation with Erasmus Plus programme, aims to help universities of partner countries to receive Syrian students in various academic specialisations by establishing units to support and employ Syrian students.

The aim of these units is presenting services to Syrian students to help them resume their academic and professional paths, the secretary general noted.

AARU has exerted considerable efforts to carry out this project that targets Syrian students, mainly those who were not able to continue their studies at Syrian universities and could not afford studying costs due to refugee conditions, Salama added.

In addition to scholarships, the secretary general said that the project also offers training courses for Syrian students in vocational, technical and technological fields and languages, as well as offering them extracurricular activities, such as scientific and entertainment trips to tourist and archaeological sites in the countries included.

He also expressed his appreciation for the Ministry of Higher Education's contribution to solving problems related to missing documents of Syrian students, by admitting them to universities and giving them enough time to submit their documents.
