AMMAN — A total of 128 schools have been provided with solar panel systems to generate electricity and reduce operational costs, according to an Energy Ministry statement.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati on Saturday said that generating 2.7 gigawatts of electricity per hour, the solar panels cover the schools' consumption to save an estimated JD450,000 annually in power bills and cut fuel bills by JD50,000.

The 128 schools have received 45,000 energy-saving light bulbs and 3,200 air conditioning units as part of a Royal initiative aims at improving the education environment in the schools, especially in terms of air conditioning, Zawati added.

Implemented through the Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF), the project, launched in 2016, has served about 55,000 students while it targets 2,600 schools across the country over the next 10 years, the statement added.
