AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a December Criminal Court ruling, sentencing two brothers to prison terms ranging from five to eight years in prison after convicting them of attempting to murder a shepherd in Amman in March 2020.

The Criminal Court declared the defendants guilty of stabbing the victim, who is their relative, with a knife on March 4 following “a heated argument” and handed them prisons terms ranging from eight to 12 years.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to five years and four months for one defendant and eight years for the second defendant because the victim dropped charges against them.

Court papers said the defendants headed to the area where the victim had taken his sheep to graze.

“The two brothers attempted to prevent the victim from allowing his sheep to graze in the land and attacked him with a wooden stick and knife,” court papers said.

The defendants struck the victim on his head with a wooden stick and stabbed him in the back and leg, according to court papers.

Residents in the area rushed to save the victim and transported him to a nearby hospital, court documents added.

The victim survived the assault after undergoing surgery to his back, the court papers added.

However, attending physicians at the hospital determined that the injuries were life-threatening and he survived due to medical interference.

The defendants contested the court ruling arguing that the court relied on contradictory statements that were provided to the authorities by the victim.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Fawzi Nahar, Nayef Samarat, Ahmad Qatatneh and Mohammad Khashashneh.
