AMMAN — Authorities on Monday started questioning a 21-year-old man who allegedly shot his father the previous day in Ruseifa, 12 kilometres east of the capital, official sources said.
The suspect, who was not identified, reportedly shot his 57-year-old father once in the head with a handmade shotgun on Sunday morning, “then buried him in the backyard of his house”, a senior official source told The Jordan Times.
The victim’s family reported him missing and started searching for him, according to the source.
“The suspect eventually told his mother that he killed his father and she alerted authorities,” the source said.
The source added that the family had dug “a four-metre-deep hole in the backyard of their house while searching for gold, and this is where the suspect allegedly buried his father after shooting him”.
Criminal Court Prosecutor Omar Hiari visited the crime scene and was expected to start interrogating the suspect on Monday evening to learn more about the incident and motives, a senior judicial source said.
“We still do not have a motive and will learn more once we interrogate the suspect and his family,” the judicial source added.
A post-mortem examination conducted by a team of pathologists comprising Ibrahim Obeidat, Rajae Shoha and Omar Khatib concluded that the victim was shot in the back of the head at close range, a medical source said.
Coroners estimated that the victim had been dead for less than 24 hours, the medical source told The Jordan Times.
