AMMAN — WeatherTec Services GmbH, a Munich-based company applying cloud ionisation technology in Jordan to enhance rainfall, has set up an academy in Amman offering courses on meteorology and climatology.

At the WeatherTec Academy for Climate and Water Security, professors and highly-trained experts from Arab countries and Europe will share their knowledge of the most advanced science on water, weather and climate in courses that will be certified by the German Jordanian University (GJU), according to WeatherTec Founder and CEO Helmut Fluhrer.

Special courses on aviation meteorology, agricultural meteorology, climate change impact reduction, extreme weather events, upgrading existing infrastructure and digitalisation and progress will be offered, Fluhrer said on Sunday.

The academy will also offer professional intensive courses on meteorology, climatology, water management, meteorological equipment and water management, in addition to executive courses on water diplomacy, climate diplomacy and international funding processes.

Theoretical know-how will be combined with practical training using state-of-the-art meteorological, climatological and water management devices, according to WeatherTec.

The company’s experts have already organised similar courses for employees of the Jordan meteorological department and the Palestinian meteorological department, Fluhrer noted.

Elena Davydova, chief technology officer at  WeatherTec, said that almost all agricultural, industrial and security activities are directly or indirectly affected by weather and climate.

Water and food security become even more essential in light of growing populations and increasing droughts, Davydova said, noting that to handle such challenges the knowledge of meteorology and climatology is essential in many professions.

The quality of life in Arab countries has to be secured, she said, highlighting that together with the GJU, WeatherTec develops customised, professional courses to offer this knowledge.

The academy will start receiving its first students soon, Davydova told The Jordan Times, indicating that a bachelor’s programme on meteorology and climatology will be offered within two years.

The Ministry of Transport signed an agreement with WeatherTec Services GmbH in March last year to apply cloud ionisation technology in Jordan to enhance rainfall and increase the country’s freshwater reserve.

The company now has four operational sites in Deir Abi Said in Irbid, Kufranjah in Ajloun, Zai in Salt and in Mushaqqar in Madaba.

The company is employing around 35 Swiss and German experts, as well as local staff, for the Jordan project and has set up a command and operations room in Amman.
