AMMAN — Jordan’s relations with Azerbaijan have improved significantly in recent years, with the countries signing around 40 cooperation agreements in various fields, the Azeri ambassador to the Kingdom has said.

Sabir Aghabayov hailed Jordanian-Azeri ties as “historic”, and said the republic considers Jordan a reliable economic and political ally, in a recent interview with The Jordan Times.

Azerbaijan had expressed its intention to activate ties with Jordan, and the Kingdom was enthusiastic to strengthen relations with the republic, the Azeri diplomat said, adding that Azerbaijan is “the leading country in the South Caucasus”.

Jordan was one of the first countries to acknowledge Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, recognising its independence on December 28, 1991, Aghabayov said.

The countries established diplomatic relations on February 13, 1993, and Azerbaijan opened an embassy in 2006. Jordan followed suit a year later, opening an embassy in Azerbaijan.

“We have excellent inter-parliamentary relations between our countries,” the ambassador said.

He added that a joint intergovernmental committee of senior officials from both countries is scheduled to hold its third meeting later this year to discuss enhancing bilateral trade. The committee first met in 2008, he noted.

The ambassador added that several Azerbaijani students are currently enrolled in Jordanian universities, while there are numerous Jordanians studying in Azerbaijan.

The ambassador stressed the importance of developing relations further, adding that the two countries have ambitious plans to expand their cooperation in education, culture, tourism and other fields to serve the interests of their peoples.

“I would like to emphasise the significance of the two countries mutually supporting each other in the United Nations and other international organisations,” he said.

“Jordan and Azerbaijan share similar views on several political and international affairs,” the ambassador added, commending the Kingdom’s efforts to achieve security and stability in the Middle East.
