Authorities in northern region ‘ready for severe weather’

AMMAN — Officials in the northern region on Wednesday announced their readiness to deal with the severe weather conditions expected to prevail this week.

Irbid Governor Hassan Assaf said the governorate’s administration has prepared an operations room in cooperation with municipality departments, the public works directorate and the Irbid District Electricity Company (IDECO).

Irbid Mayor Hussein Bani Hani said emergency teams at the municipality are ready for any incidents during the expected snowstorm, noting that Irbid residents can contact the municipality 24 hours a day on: 0790570555, 0780570555 and 02/7240034.

IDECO Spokesperson Hisham Hijazi said the company has prepared its vehicles and teams to work round-the-clock and fix any possible power cuts.

The company supplies power to the governorates of Irbid, Mafraq, Jerash and Ajloun as well as some parts of Balqa

Ramtha District Governor Bader Qadi said the district has an operations room to provide necessary help to residents.

Irbid’s Kurah District has opened eight operations rooms to deal with any road closures due to snow in high-altitude areas.

Ajloun Governor Abdullah Al Khattab said the administration has prepared a plan in cooperation with stakeholders to share duties in dealing with the expected weather conditions.

Ajloun Civil Defence Department Director Lt. Col. Hani Smadi urged the public not to leave their homes except for urgent errands during the expected blizzard.

In the central region’s Madaba Governorate, Governor Saad Shihab said emergency committee personnel are on “high alert”.
