Boosting voter participation ‘not IEC’s role’ — Kalaldeh
By JT - Sep 03,2016 - Last updated at Sep 03,2016
AMMAN — The Independent Election Commission (IEC) is not responsible for encouraging people to vote, but is tasked with administrating transparent elections, IEC President Khaled Kalaldeh clarified on Saturday.
Boosting voter participation is the responsibility of political parties, candidates and media outlets, Kalaldeh stressed, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Speaking to local media representatives, Kalaldeh noted that regional wars and conflicts played a role in discouraging people from participating in elections.
Some 1.15 million people participated in the 2013 elections, the IEC president said, noting that any increase in their number in the coming elections would be a “success”.
As for civilian contractors in the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army and other security institutions, Kalaldeh said the Elections Law allows them to vote, estimating their number at 17,034, of whom 4,039 had been issued ID cards by Wednesday.
