AMMAN — Border Guards on Sunday foiled an attempt to smuggle large amounts of drugs through a vehicle coming from Syria, an official source at the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) said in a statement.

The troops spotted a Land Cruiser on Syrian territories coming towards the Kingdom and applied the rules of engagement within Syrian lands.

As a result, the vehicle overturned, but those inside it were able to flee.

Inspection teams searched the car, confiscating 6,225,000 Captagon pills and 1,692 palm-sized sheets of hashish, which they referred to the concerned authorities, and then destroyed the vehicle, according to the statement.

The source also stressed that JAF would deal with any attempts to cross the border in any direction and counter schemes to harm Jordan and Jordanians with the necessary force.

In recent remarks to the press, Border Guards Commander Brig. Gen. Saber Mahayrah said that troops on the borders with Syria foiled 280 attempts to smuggle narcotics into the Kingdom in 2015, adding that 23 million narcotic pills, mostly Captagon, were seized during the year.
