AMMAN — Members of the British, Commonwealth, international and local communities gathered in the garden of the UK ambassador’s residence in Amman at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to remember the sacrifices of all those who gave their lives in conflict and war for the cause of peace and freedom.

World War I, during which 9 million people died and 27 million were wounded, ended at 11 o’clock on November 11, 1918, and the time and date have been commemorated ever since, according to a British embassy statement.
