Cassation Court invalidates marijuana SSC ruling

By JT - May 25,2017 - Last updated at May 25,2017

AMMAN — The Cassation Court, the supreme judicial institution in the Kingdom, has invalidated a ruling by the State Security Court (SSC), which criminalised a suspect for planting marijuana for trade purposes, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Wednesday.

SSC had sentenced the suspect to seven and a half years in prison and a fine of JD5,000, after 5 kilogrammes of marijuana were seized from the suspect’s garden. The SSC charged the man with planting narcotics for trade purposes, Petra said.

The Cassation Court said that the SSC made a mistake by weighing the entire seven seized bushes of marijuana, explaining that marijuana cannot be used before removing its leaves and drying.

The Cassation Court said that the seized items were not big enough to sell and were only meant for consumption by the three people involved in the case.
