AMMAN — Vice Premier of China’s State Council Liu Yandong and Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) President Mohammad Nawafleh on Friday discussed means to enhance tourism cooperation.

Nawafleh said that discussions focused on increasing support and employing tools to further promote the rose-red city, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Saturday.

As part of PDTRA’s efforts to enhance Petra’s presence on the international tourism map, the authority signed two deals last month in China, including one entering Petra into the UN World Tourism Organisation’s City Tourism Network, the president said.

The other deal was a twinning agreement with the Great Wall of China.

Liu, accompanied by several Chinese officials, visited the Siq, the Treasury, the Nabatean amphitheatre, the Byzantine church and the Petra Visitor Centre.

Also on Friday, the vice premier visited the Petra College for Tourism and Antiquities, affiliated with Al Hussein Bin Talal University, where she noted the deep-rooted historical relations between Jordan and China, which date back thousands of years due to the Silk Road.

Liu said that the college has “unique characteristics” that make it a great asset for the Kingdom’s tourist sector, including attracting Chinese tourists.

The visit sought to enhance bilateral cooperation between Amman and Beijing, especially in the field of education, she said, announcing five annual scholarships for the university, Petra reported.
