Fakhoury, senior US official discuss international aid

AMMAN — Jordan has called on the US to urge the international community to fulfil its commitments at the London Conference and to contribute to attracting more investments and creating new jobs. 

Planning and International Cooperation Minister Imad Fakhoury on Wednesday met with US Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration, Mark Storella, according to a Planning Ministry statement. 

During the meeting, Fakhoury noted that Jordan’s recent participation in the Brussels Conference came to follow up on the outcomes of the London Conference, where the international community renewed its political and financial support to Jordan through the Jordan Output Document, stressing the need for the international community to continue honouring its commitments in accordance with the document.

During his meeting with the US official, Fakhoury outlined the economic challenges facing the Kingdom resulting from the instability in the region and the difficulties of hosting Syrian refugees, while reviewing the Jordanian model of dealing with these challenges.

Fakhoury and Storella discussed the importance of the international community’s continued support to the Kingdom, particularity in order for Jordanian businesses to benefit from the simplified rules of origin deal with the EU, attract more investments, seek more financial and technical support to boost economic growth, increase exports and employment for youth and women, and support the implementation of the Jordanian Human Resources Development Strategy.

For his part, Storella praised Jordan’s active role in welcoming Syrian refugees and providing them with support and assistance. 

He stressed that Jordan is a model for the world in dealing with refugees, expressing his understanding of the challenges facing Jordan and the burden of receiving them.

 

 He also stressed that the US stands by Jordan and provides support to overcome all difficulties facing the Kingdom.
