AMMAN — Prime Minister Omar Razzaz on Tuesday stressed that freedom of expression and peaceful protest are rights safeguarded by the Constitution and the law.

During a meeting with social media activists, Razzaz said that “we, as a society and as institutions, must accept differences in opinions”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Razzaz noted that the government is studying a public pardon law. A after all aspects of the law have been studied, it will be sent to Parliament to constitutionally enact it.

He also commended the “civilised manner” in which recent protests were held, as well as the professional handling of these demonstrations by security agencies.

The government believes in the public’s right to criticise its policies and actions, Razzaz said.

Meanwhile, Razzaz announced that the government will work on the release of administrative detainees if they are proven to be innocent of any crimes, while it is up to the court to decide regarding those who have been referred to it, according to Petra.

The prime minister assured the activists that the government fully realises the load and frustration of Jordanians regarding economic conditions and the political reform process, and stressed that his Cabinet is committed to fighting corruption and its sources, pointing out a number of practical measures taken by the government to that end, including the recently passed Illicit Gains Law.

Activists reiterated calls for enhancing social justice, fostering freedom of expression and exerting efforts to enact a new modern elections law, in addition to creating job opportunities for youth, improving the public transport and health sectors and revisiting the process of pricing fuel.
