AMMAN — The fundraising campaign to benefit indebted inmates (gharimeen), organised by the national association for the care of inmates in correctional and rehabilitation centres, collected JD100,000 on Monday.

The campaign was launched earlier in the day, in cooperation with the Husna FM radio station, to raise donations for those in question, according to a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The association held an open day to raise the money in support of the gharimeen, Petra reported on Sunday.

The funds collected benefit those who do not have a criminal record but have been detained for being unable to pay their debts such as rent and electric bills, the statement said.

The campaign hopes to reunite them with their families before Eid Al Fitr, Petra reported.

Association Director Mohammad Abu Sufeh commended the Public Security Department’s readiness to help.

The correctional and rehabilitation centres administration helped the association by nominating inmates who meet the criteria and can benefit from the initiative.

His Majesty King Abdullah, in a call-in with Jordan Television’s Friday morning show “Yised Sabahak” on March 22, called for a joint national effort to support gharimat (indebted women) unable to pay back loans they had taken to support their families

By May 7, a total of 6,481 gharimat were reported to have benefited from the Royal Initiative, at a total of JD6.3 million in debts paid out on their behalf, the statement added.
