AMMAN — The Water Ministry will distribute agricultural land and provide water resources in Ghweibeh in Southern Ghor to improve the living conditions of its residents, government officials said on Wednesday.

Under the project, the Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) will distribute dozens of agricultural units and explore new water resources for irrigation purposes in Ghweibeh, which suffers from high poverty and unemployment rates, Water Ministry Spokesperson Omar Salameh told The Jordan Times.

A total of 150-200 dunums of agricultural land will be distributed to the residents of Ghweibeh via a local cooperative society, Salameh said, noting that the project is under way and will be completed within two months to assist in the socio-economic development of the area.

Water Minister Hazem Nasser said in a statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times that under the project, which will cost JD250,000, the JVA will also equip a well in Ghweibeh with pumps to produce 40 cubic metres of water per hour for the irrigation of crops.

The JVA is scouting lands in and around Ghweibeh to rehabilitate those suitable for cultivation before it distributes them to area residents, Nasser said, highlighting that cultivating lands will achieve economic development in the area and reduce poverty.

Salameh said Ghweibeh, which is located 200 kilometres south of the capital, has a population of 1,200 people, noting that the area lacks many services.

The government official said that under the project, the JVA will establish a carrier from the well to the agricultural units, which will be rented by area residents.

The ministry called on people in Ghweibeh to apply to the JVA via their local cooperative to receive agricultural land and irrigation water.
