AMMAN — The Lower House Committee on Public Freedoms and Human Rights on Sunday discussed the circumstances surrounding the recent arrest of a citizen, whose pictures and claims of being assaulted by security forces have been circulated on social media.

Deputy Rula Hroub highlighted the rights that all detainees should enjoy, including the need to inform their families of their whereabouts upon arrest and to have an attorney appointed in their defence.

Hroub noted that an immediate investigation should be launched into the incident, expressing her appreciation of the government’s speedy response and its cooperation with the committee.

Basel Tarawneh, the government coordinator on human rights, who was at the meeting, explained that the citizen was injured while resisting arrest and shooting at police when they raided his house.

The Public Security Department is currently investigating the issue.
