AMMAN — By-elections for Karak’s 6th District, which were slated for Saturday, have been postponed until April 22, Independent Elections Commission (IEC) Spokesperson Hussein Bani Hani said on Thursday.
Bani Hani said the decision taken by the IEC board of commissioners was in accordance with the law, which grants the IEC the authority to postpone elections if deemed necessary.
The decision followed a letter from Interior Minister Hussein Majali recommending that the by-elections be postponed so that the IEC, in coordination with the ministry, can adopt a security plan to guarantee smooth polls, Bani Hani said.
The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) announced that three out of the four candidates running for the parliamentary seat for Karak 6th District withdrew from the by-elections, leaving candidate Nayef Lemoun alone in the race.
The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) will conduct a by-election to fill the Lower House seat left vacant by Mohammad Mahseiri, who died of a heart attack last week, once officially notified by the Chamber of Deputies, IEC Spokesperson Hussein Bani Hani said on Sunday.
Newly elected deputy Mohammad Mahsiri (Amman, 2nd District) passed away early Thursday leaving his Lower House seat vacant.
