AMMAN — Jerash University officials on Monday said classes will resume on Tuesday, two days after an off-campus brawl that led to the injury of three people.

“Classes will resume as normal tomorrow [Tuesday] and the university is not affected in any way because the incident occurred outside the campus,” the university President Abderrazaq Bani Hani said.

He told The Jordan Times that the university “suspended its classes, following advice from the police, so that it would not spread on to the campus”.

“The brawl occurred between three people  who were not related to the university, who used sharp objects, around 600 meters away from the main entrance,” Bani Hani told The Jordan Times.

He added that one Sharia student who was praying in a nearby mosque saw the brawl and “intervened to stop the individuals fighting and got hurt in the process”.

Police said on Sunday that three people were injured in the brawl, including one in critical condition.

Bani Hani said the person who was listed in critical condition was a gas station employee near the university premises.

“We have checked on him and his situation is stable now,” the university president added.

Director of the Counseling Office at the university Hamzeh Hawamdeh said that the priority was the safety of the students.

There are currently around 4,500 students enrolled at the university, Hawamdeh told The Jordan Times.

The university’s board is expected to meet soon to “discuss the incident and take the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the students,” according to Bani Hani.

Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said that several people were arrested in connection with the brawl.

“Investigations are ongoing in the case and we are questioning several people,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
