Jordan condemns burning of Koran in Denmark

AMMAN — Jordan condemned the burning of a copy of the Holy Koran by a number of extremists in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Friday, describing it as an inciting, racist act that aims to provoke the feelings of Muslims, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

A Foreign Ministry statement stressed that burning the Holy Koran is a manifestation of dangerous hatred and Islamophobia that incites violence and insults religions, affirming that such actions cannot be considered a form of freedom of expression.

The ministry underlined the need to stop such irresponsible behaviours that fuel violence and hatred, and threaten peaceful coexistence.

It is a collective responsibility to confront such acts, promote a culture of peace and acceptance of the other, raise awareness about common respect, spread the values of harmony and tolerance, and reject extremism, fanaticism and incitement to hatred, the ministry said, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities in this regard.
