Jordan, Egypt discuss response to terrorism challenge

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Saturday received Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri and discussed efforts to confront the dangers of extremist ideologies on the region and its people. 

At the meeting with the Egyptian official, who conveyed greetings of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, King Abdullah expressed his satisfaction with the level of bilateral relations between Amman and Cairo, stressing the Kingdom’s full support for Egypt to resume its regional role to serve the causes of the Arab nation and boost joint Arab action, according to a Royal Court statement. 

King Abdullah and Shukri discussed the latest developments regarding efforts to stand up to face challenges posed by extremist ideologies on regional stability and security, noting that this necessitates further cooperation and coordination among all countries and parties. 

As for efforts to achieve regional peace, the two sides stressed that all international and influential powers should work to create a climate conducive to revive peace efforts between the Palestinians and the Israelis, on the basis of the two-state solution, relevant international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. 

On developments in Syria and Iraq, the two sides asserted the importance of arriving at a political solution for the Syrian crisis and the need to support the Iraqi government in combating the terrorist groups, the statement said.

The Egyptian top diplomat expressed his country’s commitment to maintaining consultations and cooperation with Jordan regarding issues of mutual concern, in a manner that serves the interests of the two countries and their peoples.

Shukri expressed Egypt’s appreciation of Jordan’s position, led by King Abdullah, in support of Egypt.

Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, King’s Adviser on National Security Affairs and the General Intelligence Department Director Gen. Faisal Shobaki, Director of the King’s Office Jafar Hassan and the delegation accompanying Shukri attended the meeting.
