Jordan qualified for a pivotal role in Iraq rebuilding — Momani

AMMAN — Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani said that Jordan was willing to use its capabilities to support the reconstruction efforts in Iraq, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.   

Momani, who is also the government spokesperson, pointed out that the integration of the Jordanian and Iraqi economies, geographical proximity, fundamental interconnection, historical economic and social relations and Jordan’s deep knowledge of Iraqi society are crucial factors that nominate Jordan for a stronger role in rebuilding Iraq.

In his remarks at the Kuwait International Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq (KICRI), Momani stressed on the bilateral relations between Iraq and Jordan, reiterating that Jordan supports Iraqi people in their efforts to fight terrorism, rebuild their country and achieve stability through intensive bilateral cooperation in the military, security and economic areas.

Momani said: “The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, stresses on its continuous support to the Iraqi government’s efforts, and the brotherly Iraqi people, in fighting terrorism, and regain stability and security, reconstruct Iraq and achieve sustainable development.”

He highlighted Jordan’s preparedness to be the facilitator of the reconstruction efforts through the Karameh Border Crossing-Turaibil Border Compound, which is close to Iraqi regions targeted by reconstruction plans due to the damage they have received during the times of turbulence.

Momani called on the international and Arab public and private sectors to stand with Iraq in as it endeavours to shape its future and overcome challenges.

He added that Iraq needs partner’s support to bring about sustainable stability to begin with, along with reconstruction projects in the sectors Iraq has selected. The country also needs support to restore normal life in cities liberated from terrorist rule and displaced people to return to their homes. 

Momani underlined that the rebuilding process is not only about reconstructing infrastructure, but also extends to adopt a holistic approach that adresses the causes of extremism leading to violence and destruction. 

Momani expressed Jordan’s appreciation of for its initiative and praised the role of the United Nations, European Union and World Bank for their support of the event.
