AMMAN — Jordan on Thursday condemned the ongoing Israeli assaults on Al Aqsa Mosque, the latest of which was a few days ago, when Jewish extremists stormed into Al Haram Al Sharif under the protection of the Israeli occupation authorities.

In a statement on Thursday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sufian Qudah said that “such irresponsible acts provoke millions of Muslims around the world”, adding that the government sent a letter of objection to Israel through diplomatic channels over the ongoing violations in occupied Jerusalem.

The spokesperson also said that such “denounced and rejected” Israeli measures in Jerusalem seek to change the status quo in the occupied city, reiterating that the Jerusalem Awqaf Department is the sole caretaker of Al Aqsa Mosque and the only body handling the entry to the Aqsa Mosque complex.

Qudah emphasised that Israel, as an occupying power, must abide by its obligations under the international law, which considers East Jerusalem an occupied territory and to which the provisions of international law and international humanitarian law apply.
