AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday discussed with a delegation of members of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe the Jordanian-European relations, as well as the latest regional and international developments.

The meeting, which was held at Al Husseiniya Palace, focussed on the importance of enhancing cooperation and partnership between the Kingdom and the EU at all levels, especially in the political and economic fields, according to a Royal Court statement.

The discussion also covered the increasing burdens imposed by the Syrian refugee influx on the Kingdom, with His Majesty urging the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards host countries to enable them to continue aid and humanitarian services to refugees.

Regarding the Mideast peace process, King Abdullah reiterated the importance of intensifying efforts aimed at resuming negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis, according to the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative and international legitimacy resolutions, leading to the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

His Majesty and the delegates reviewed regional crises, challenges and endeavours to reach political solutions to these conflicts, as well as efforts exerted in the war against terrorism within a holistic approach.

In this regard, the King warned against Islamophobia and the repercussions of isolating Muslim communities in the West lest terrorists use that as a pretext to feed their agendas.

The delegates commended His Majesty’s efforts in consolidating partnership between the Kingdom and EU countries, and his efforts to realise just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

They also praised the Kingdom’s humanitarian role in hosting refugees and securing their needs in the educational, health and aid fields, referring to the high level of cooperation between Jordan and international organisations that seek to help refugees.

Jordan is currently hosting a meeting that is organised by the committee to discuss refugees’ conditions, services provided to them and means to provide the support necessary to ease the repercussions of the refugee influx on the Kingdom, the statement added.
