Long snowy weekend a chance to catch up with family, friends

AMMAN — Jordanians took advantage of the three-day weekend by spending more time with the family, and playing in the snow with friends and relatives.

Many stayed up until dawn on Friday waiting for the snow to accumulate and started posting photos of the first hours of the snowstorm on social media networks.

Several Ammanis and the capital’s visitors, including people from the Gulf, went out after the Friday sermon to play in the snow and build snowmen.

Others headed to restaurants to buy food for their relatives and neighbours.

Reem Matahen, a private sector employee, said she went out early on Friday to play in the snow with her relatives and nephews.

“We went out at 8:30am and spent hours playing in the snow. It’s really fun since Jordan does not usually receive a lot of snow every year,” she told The Jordan Times.

For some, such weather conditions bring together family members who hardly see each other on normal days due to work or school.

Firas Manaseer is one of these people.

“It was a good opportunity for me to spend some time with my children,” he said.

Manaseer also took advantage of the holiday to relax after a long working week.

“It was really a good chance for me to spend some relaxing days far from the hectic routine,” he added.

Mohammad Abu Rakhiah was excited about building his first snowman with his neighbours in Maan, some 220km south of Amman.

“When I first saw the accumulated snow outside our home, I called my neighbours and we went out immediately to build our snowman. It took us hours,” the 10-year-old said.

Sanad Abu Assaf, another private sector employee, said the holiday provided him with the opportunity to take a long walk and meet friends, whom he hardly sees because of his job.

“I also had the chance to watch a number of movies as I usually buy DVDs ahead of any snowstorm to keep myself entertained,” he added.

Football-addict Ahmad Eid did not miss the chance to watch his favourite football matches.

He arranged a get-together with his friends at a nearby café to watch a football match and the snowfall at the same time.

“That was something new we have not done before,” Eid noted.

At sunrise on Saturday, several Jordanians went to shopping centres and bakeries to buy items their families needed.

They also started clearing snow outside their homes and checked on their vehicles in preparation for the first working day after the storm on Sunday.
