AMMAN — The Lower House is following up on the situation in Maan and working to address security problems that arise from time to time to be able to address the town’s development needs, Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawneh said Thursday.

At a meeting with the Maan security council in the southern city, in the presence of Amman MP Khalil Atiyeh and Maan deputies Amjad Al Khattab and Awad Kreishan, Tarawneh noted that Maan has suffered marginalisation and injustice in the distribution of development revenues for a long time, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He also stressed the importance of improving living standards in the governorate, some 220km south of Amman, enhancing commercial activity, and investing in human and natural resources to mitigate poverty and unemployment.

The Lower House speaker urged the government to adequately address problems in Maan, praising the cooperation of the city’s inhabitants who handed over “fugitives” to authorities, according to Petra.

Tarawneh told local community leaders that initiatives launched by Maan residents in cooperation with the House have provided guarantees to maintain the state’s sovereignty and respect of its citizens, noting that those who surrendered will face fair legal procedures.

Earlier this year, several instances of unrest were witnessed in Maan following the death of one person and the injury of a dozen others, including security personnel, during police raids to detain wanted persons.

Tarawneh noted that the government has promised to study all demands by Maan residents and deputies, and will try to meet them according to available resources, in order to rebuild and enhance mutual trust between Maanis and officials, Petra reported.

On the sidelines of the visit, Tarawneh inaugurated a number of projects financed by the Development and Employment Fund.

He also called on businessmen and companies to launch projects in Maan particularly since “it enjoys the required economic and investment potential,” in addition to the needed infrastructure.
