Lower House integrity committee to investigate ‘Ajloun treasure’ claims

By JT - Sep 28,2014 - Last updated at Sep 28,2014

AMMAN — The Lower House Integrity and Transparency Committee on Sunday decided to submit a memo to House Speaker Atef Tarawneh outlining plans to investigate  the recent excavations in Ajloun, which were rumoured to be in search of buried historical treasures, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The move follows claims last week that the military had unearthed treasures worth billions of dinars in the northern governorate.

The memo noted that a delegation will meet with the owner of the land and concerned authorities to determine the purpose of the digs.

The committee said the decision was taken due to mounting public pressure to clarify the objectives of the armed forces project.

The government has said that the dig had pure military purposes, dismissing claims of buried treasure.
