AMMAN — Maan police have arrested an Arab man for his suspected involvement in several thefts in the southern city, with investigations revealing that he was also wanted for child molestation cases in the capital, a police statement said Tuesday.

A few weeks ago, police in Maan started investigating three house robberies in the city, some 220km south of Amman, after their owners reported the theft of jewellery, money and mobile phones, according to a Public Security Department statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times.

The perpetrator reportedly entered the three houses by breaking the doors, stealing two kilogrammes of gold, JD6,000 and mobile phones from one house, and jewellery and electronic devices from the other two, the statement said.

Investigation led to the suspect, who was not identified in the PSD statement, and the man was arrested and confessed to committing the thefts.

A search of his residence yielded stolen jewellery, currency notes, three mobile phones and a gun, the PSD said.

Upon analysis at the crime lab, blood samples taken from the suspect proved to be identical to samples found at sites of sexual molestation incidents of two young girls in Amman.

The incidents took place a year ago, the statement said.

The suspect confessed to committing the sexual assaults against the children and will be referred to court.
