MAFRAQ — The movement of goods between Jordan and Syria is continuing as normal, Mafraq Agriculture Department Director Awni Shdeifat said Tuesday.
He noted that around 409 tonnes of vegetables were exported via the Jaber border crossing on Monday, while the amount of agriculture produce exported to Russia via Syria stood at 142 tonnes and to Lebanon 34 tonnes.
Meanwhile, Jordan imported 485 tonnes of vegetables from Syria, Shdeifat added.
Agriculture Ministry Secretary General Radi Tarawneh on Sunday said local fruits and vegetables will begin entering the Iraqi market to enable farmers to compensate for the losses they incurred as a result of the halt of exports to Syria due to the unstable situation.
Jordan has exported 35,000 sheep to Saudi Arabia since the beginning of this year, according to Awni Shdeifat, director of the Mafraq agriculture department.
The Ministry of Agriculture is exploring new portals for exporting local produce to east European countries as the Syria route has been suspended, according to a government official.
