AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) said Sunday its tankers sprayed water in several streets of the capital, particularly in downtown Amman, as a measure to ease the effects of the heatwave affecting the Kingdom.

The head of GAM’s media department, Mazen Farajin, said GAM tankers began spraying water on the streets in order to ease the high temperatures which reached 42oC in Amman on Sunday, as much as possible.

“We also focused on downtown Amman because temperatures are high compared to other parts of the capital,” he told The Jordan Times over the phone on Sunday.

GAM sanitation workers also distributed water bottles to pedestrians between 11am and 3pm.

The Kingdom is currently under the impact of a very hot air mass which is forecast to continue during this week, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said Saturday.

Authorities have advised people against direct exposure to sunlight during the hottest part of the day between 12pm and 3pm in order to avoid sunstroke and heat exhaustion.

Amman Mayor Aqel Biltaji on Saturday ordered a number of procedures to organise work during the heatwave.

Sanitation, park and field workers are required to wear protective head covers and avoid working during peak hours.

GAM drivers will also be working early in the morning before the hottest part of the day and late at night, avoiding work during the afternoon.
