‘Prices of vegetables dropping below production cost’

By Petra - Mar 22,2015 - Last updated at Mar 22,2015

AMMAN — Prices of several vegetables available in the central market are now below production cost, especially potatoes and tomatoes, which has negatively affected farmers, according to Jordan Exporters and Producers Association for Fruits and Vegetables President Saadi Abu Hammad.

He commended the actions taken by agriculture, interior, and transport ministries to facilitate the entry of refrigerated trucks from Iraq, noting that the procedures will allow for exporting a larger amount of products to Iraq.

A number of refrigerated trucks laden with vegetables from Jordan are stuck at the Jordanian-Iraqi border because Iraqi officials refuse to let them in, he said.
