AMMAN — HRH Princess Haya, wife of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, on Thursday announced a JD28 million donation to Tkiyet Um Ali, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The donation is to enable Tkiyet Um Ali to launch the second phase of the food support programme it seeks to implement in Jordan.

Tkiyet Um Ali is a non-governmental organisation which provides between 350 and 400 hot meals a day to underprivileged people.

The donation is an initiative from Princess Haya, Sheikha Al Jalila Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Zayed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in light of the death anniversary of King Hussein and Queen Alia on February 7 and February 9.

Princess Haya, chairwoman of Tkiyet Um Ali’s board of directors, said that around 18 years have passed since the passing of her father and 40 years since the death of her mother Queen Alia, who both cared for charity and humanitarian work.

She said the donation aims at increasing the number of benefiting families from the food support programmes by an additional 10,000, making the total number 30,000.

The second phase of the food support programme is supervised by a steering committee headed by HRH Prince Ali, Petra reported.

The term “tkiyet” dates back to the Ottoman days, when prominent families opened facilities on their estates to offer food to the poor and homeless.

Tkiyet Um Ali was founded in 2003 by Princess Haya. It combines a model of sustainable food with humanitarian aid.
