AMMAN — The holy month of Ramadan begins Sunday in Jordan, Chief Islamic Justice Ahmad Hilayel announced on Friday.
Hilayel said the crescent moon (hilal) was not spotted in Jordan on Friday, which makes Sunday the first day of the holy month.
In Islam, to determine the start of Ramadan, people look for the crescent and those who sight the new moon report to the Sharia court to testify.
Ramadan starts the day after the sighting of crescent moon, which marks the beginning of a new lunar month and ends with spotting Shawal’s crescent.
