AMMAN — Social media platforms Facebook and Twitter were flooded with messages of grief and outrage on Tuesday after the news was released about Jordanian pilot Muath Kasasbeh’s death at the hands of the so-called Islamic State (IS) group.

Jordanians took to social media to mourn the pilot, convey condolences to his family and condemn IS’ savagery, while hashtags in Arabic such as #WeAreMuath #LastMonth, #TheNation’sMartyr were trending in the region within an hour of the news.

Jude Al Sajdi posted on Facebook: “It has been confirmed that our Jordanian pilot Muath has been murdered by IS. What the world is witnessing today is not religious fanaticism, it is absence of humanity. We are witnessing brutality, injustice and ruthlessness, all over. May his soul rest in peace.”

“Taking savagery to a different level: IS released a tape of Jordanian pilot [Muath Kasasbeh] being burned alive #Jordanianpilot,” Ali H. Soufan (@Ali_H_Soufan) wrote on Twitter.

Anoud Hindawi (@Anoud_Hindawi) tweeted: “May God rest your soul in peace hero! Your memory will be carved in our hearts forever.”

“The world needs to wake up. This is a war against humanity. #ISIS #JordanianPilot,” Farah Naber (@‏farahalnaber) said on Twitter.

Many also voiced their disapproval of circulating the pictures and video purportedly depicting the last minutes of the pilot’s life.

Nour Kabariti posted on Facebook: “Today Muath is a hero. May he rest in peace and may God give his parents strength. The simplest form of respect would be to refrain from posting videos or pictures pertaining to his torture and murder.”

Social media users from all over the world also joined in, condemning the murder of the pilot.

From Pennsylvania in the US, S I Habib (@‏irfhabib) tweeted: “No limits to ISIS barbarity. How can any human, if he/she is human at all, cage a fellow human and burn him alive. #JordanianPilot.”

“#ISIS has surpassed all known definitions of barbarism. This cancer must be exterminated #MuathalKasasbeh #Jordan,” wrote Mihad Kashif (@Kashifian) from Pakistan.
