AMMAN — The Kingdom will be under the effect of a “very cold air mass” as of Sunday, with temperatures expected to drop near or below zero at night, Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) Director Mohammad Samawi said on Thursday.

Below-zero temperatures are forecast in hilly areas, Samawi said, adding that gusty winds reaching a speed of 80km per hour are also expected in some areas.

Scattered showers are also expected over the Kingdom’s northern region on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, according to the JMD.

Temperatures on Sunday are expected to fall 4°C to 5°C below their annual average for this time of year.

On Friday, it will be relatively cold around Jordan, with frost formation expected after midnight, the JMD said.

Temperatures in Amman are expected to range between a high of 15°C and a low of 4°C.

In Aqaba, mercury levels are forecast to be between 23°C and 9°C, another JMD statement said.

On Saturday, a slight drop in temperatures is expected, with mercury levels ranging between a high of 13°C and a low of 2°C in Amman.

In Aqaba, temperatures will be between 20°C and 7°C.

Frost formation is expected at night in hilly areas, in addition to the badia and eastern plains, the JMD said.

The department is following up on weather developments round the clock, and will continue, as usual, issuing detailed weather forecasts covering four days and sending them to media outlets and relevant institutions, Samawi said.

He also called on the public to rely on weather information issued by the JMD, in its capacity as the official weather forecasting institution in the Kingdom, by following updates on www.jmd.gov.jo or through its Facebook page.
