AMMAN — A six-hour shootout ended with the arrest of a 34-year-old man who allegedly shot and killed a man and his son in Zarqa on Saturday, police announced on Sunday.

The suspect reportedly exchanged fire with police after taking refuge in a deserted building in Ruseifa, Public Security Department (PSD) Spokesperson Lt. Col. Mohammad Khatib said.

No one was injured in the incident, Khatib added.

In his initial confession to police, the suspect said he had gone to the home of the 59-year-old man, where they had a heated argument over the victim’s refusal to let the suspect marry his daughter.

The suspect told investigators that he started shooting randomly with a pump-action gun, according to the PSD official.

“Several bullets struck the victim and his 13-year-old son, killing them instantly,” Khatib said.

The victim’s wife and daughter, whom the suspect wanted to marry, were unharmed during the shooting incident.

The suspect then fled the scene, but police “chased him and closed several roads in Zarqa to prevent him from escaping”.

“The suspect took refuge in a deserted building in Ruseifa and… finally surrendered after he ran out of ammunition,” Khatib said.
