AMMAN — Police on Sunday announced the arrest of a 19-year-old man who reportedly confessed to murdering then burning a man in an Amman suburb at dawn on Saturday.
The matter was disclosed when Civil Defence Department (CDD) firefighters were called in to extinguish a fire at a small apartment in Jabal Jofeh on Saturday morning, Public Security Department (PSD) Spokesperson Lt. Col. Mohammad Khatib said.
“Firefighters found a body and when coroners examined it they concluded that the victim had been stabbed and the incident became a homicide,” Khatib told The Jordan Times.
Police questioned the victim’s neighbours and relatives, who said he was 60 years old and lived alone, according to the PSD official.
“A witness informed us that he saw the suspect leaving the victim’s house late at night on Friday,” Khatib said, adding that upon questioning, the teenager “confessed to murdering the victim over personal disputes”.
In his initial confession to investigators, the suspect said he set fire to the victim’s body in a bid to conceal the murder.
Nothing was stolen from the victim’s apartment, according to the police official.
The suspect was referred to the criminal court prosecutor for questioning, he added.
