AMMAN – A man in his twenties and a woman in her thirties were killed in a road accident on Sunday, the Civil Defence Department (CDD) said.

Their car overturned and hit an electricity pole on the Desert Road, which links Amman to the southern region and Aqaba, a CDD official said, adding that another person was injured.

“The injured was taken to Al Nadim Hopsital [in Madaba], where she was reported to be in critical condition,” the official told The Jordan Times on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, CDD workers put out a fire that erupted when a vehicle overturned and rolled downhill in Aqaba.

“The driver managed to get out of the car without sustaining injuries,” said the CDD official, noting that no other injuries were reported.

On Saturday, seven people were injured in a collision between a bus carrying umra pilgrims and a truck in Azraq in the east desert.

CDD cadres administered first aid to the injured and rushed them to the Azraq healthcare centre where they were listed in fair condition.

Friday also witnessed a road accident that resulted in the death of a young woman whose wedding was scheduled to take place in Eid Al Fitr, the feast that follows the fasting month of Ramadan.

“Road accidents during this Ramadan are within the usual range, but having young people dying as a result gives the impression that they are on the rise,” due to the exposure the news receives on mainstream and social media, said the CDD official.
