AMMAN — The University of Jordan (UJ) on Tuesday announced the launch of new undergraduate majors in criminal justice and criminology at the university’s Faculty of Arts.

The faculty’s dean, Abata Tawayha, said the programmes aim to raise university students’ awareness of crimes and other threats.

Applications are expected to open for the upcoming semester in September, and the courses will be run in cooperation with the security forces and officials working in correctional and rehabilitation centres, Tawayha told The Jordan Times.

“The new programme is being introduced for the first time at UJ. It is currently only taught at Mutah University, and it has been accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Higher Education Accreditation Commission,” he said.

Subjects will be taught in cooperation with Al Quds University- Abu Dis Campus - in Palestine, he said, adding that students from Palestine will be able to take some subjects in Jordan.

“It will be a project of cooperation between both universities, where students can interact and discuss issues. Professors [from that field] can also exchange subjects and teach in either Jordan or Palestine,” he noted.

Tawayha added: “It is a newly introduced programme but we expect a high turnout, especially with all the circumstances in the region. Young Jordanians are eager to know about these issues.”

He said the majors require the completion of 132 credit hours, over an average period of four years.

The subjects include managing rehabilitation centres, terrorism, victimology and extremism, according to the dean.

“The material will be covered from several aspects, such as from the social, security, psychological, criminal and judicial angles,” he added.

The programme aims to provide students with the basic knowledge needed to join security forces across the Kingdom, Tawayha said.

The university plans to launch a post-graduate programme for the same major, he noted, expecting to receive many applications from Jordan and neighbouring countries.

The university administration on Tuesday announced that the first semester of the new academic year starts on September 4.
