AMMAN — A 38-year-old woman was killed and eight people were injured on Wednesday when their vehicle collided with an oil tanker in Zarqa, the Central Traffic Department (CTD) said Thursday.

“The collision happened at 11pm on a two-way road in Zarqa,” Lt. Col. Yaser Habahbeh of the CTD said.

A Saudi national was driving with his wife and children in a Land Cruiser, and may have failed to see a detour, causing him to drive at speed towards concrete barriers and then swerve to the left, Habahbeh told The Jordan Times over the phone.

The vehicle then hit an oil tanker, which was turning right, Habahbeh explained, noting that the speed limit on the Azraq road is 60 kilometres an hour.

“The mother died, while the children and their father were injured,” said Habahbeh, noting that the oldest child was 13.

Aside from the family, there were no injuries, he said, noting that the tanker driver was not hurt.

Civil Defence cadres administered first aid at the scene, and took those with injuries to Zarqa Public Hospital, where they are in fair condition.

Between May 26 and June 1, there were 2,494 road accidents across Jordan, causing eight deaths and 336 injuries, the CTD said.
