AMMAN — Local and international sponsors have stepped into the ring to support Jordan’s hosting of the Asian/Oceanian Tokyo 2020 Boxing Qualifying Event, which will be held in Amman from March 3-11, according to the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

Jordan agreed to host the prestigious tournament following the decision to move it from Coronavirus-hit Wuhan in China, and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has been boosted by the support of Societe Generale De Banque Jordan, Zain, Buffalo Wings and Rings, Taishan and Aramex, as well as Coca-Cola, one of the official top partners for the International Olympic Committee.

Work continues around the clock to prepare a world-class venue in the capital’s Prince Hamzah Hall at Al Hussein Youth City.

The event is expected to attract the best boxers from 54 countries who are vying to pick up one of the 41 men’s qualifying spots available from eight weight divisions and 22 female places from five weights for this summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The LOC’s efforts have been recognised by a number of companies who have also thrown their weight behind the event in a bid to make it an unprecedented success.

“We have been short on time but huge on effort to ensure that this event meets the extremely high standards of the Olympic family,” said Nasser Majali, secretary general of the Jordan Olympic Committee and chairman of the LOC. “We are pleased with our progress and look forward to welcoming our friends from two continents to Amman over the coming days. “The support that we have received from the business community has been particularly heartening and provides us with the helping hand required to produce a world-class event.”
