AMMAN — Calm was restored in a town in Karak late Wednesday night following small scale riots after news emerged that a man who was shot earlier this week has died, official sources said.

“Our initial investigation indicated that the family of the man who was shot on Friday and died Wednesday was angry and set tyres on fire to block streets and attacked some properties,” Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

Gendarmeries forces were dispatched to the town as a precautionary measure and “we managed to contain the situation without any major incidents.  The situation is back to normal,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

A suspect has been arrested and the Criminal Court prosecutor will start questioning the man to level charges against him, a senior judicial source said.

“The suspect was originally charged with attempted murder but now the charge will be changed to murder,” the judicial source added.

Initial investigation indicated that the shooting incident “occurred over financial feuds between the suspect and the 27-year-old victim”, the judicial source told The Jordan Times.

A postmortem indicated that the victim received two bullets to his back, the judicial source said.

The suspect is currently detained for 14 days pending further investigation and questioning, the judicial source added.
