Grape scientific conference kicks off in Ajloun

AMMAN — Agriculture Minister Khaled Hneifat on Monday inaugurated the Ajloun grape scientific conference at the Ajloun National University, some 70km northwest of Amman. 

The conference is organised by the National Centre for Agricultural Research and Extension (NCARE) and the Agricultural Engineers Association’s branch in Ajloun, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During his opening speech, Hneifat highlighted the importance of joining efforts to spread the scientific research knowledge about grapes and their various applications, as well as the agricultural processes implemented to develop this economically valuable product.

The minister expressed his appreciation of the national efforts exerted by NCARE and the association in adopting scientific approaches and modern technologies in the sector, voicing the ministry’s readiness to cooperate in developing the agricultural sector to help realise the sustainable development of the countryside.

NCARE Director General Nizar Hadad highlighted the importance of the event in terms of economic profitability and the high revenues for farmers’ families, which contribute to increasing individuals’ incomes.

Association President Abdul Hadi Falahat referred to the “high” scientific proficiency of agricultural engineers and their practical field roles in the agricultural process, in addition to training courses offered by members of the association on modern technologies used in cultivating grapes. 

For his part, University President Mahmoud Rousan said that the university has been hosting several conferences, symposiums and lectures in cooperation with public and private sectors’ institutions, out of its belief in the role it can play in enhancing scientific research that can serve the local community.

Hassan Smadi, head of the association branch in Ajloun, voiced the syndicate's constant keenness on implementing agricultural activities and programmes that shed light on the importance of local produce, marketing mechanisms and the quality improvement.

The conference includes research papers highlighting local produce and grape types and their importance for Ajloun, as well as challenges and diseases threatening grape planting.
