Before challenges become risks

Nov 08,2015 - Last updated at Nov 08,2015

As crises in the region do not seem to be anywhere near the end, countries should consider adopting new-fangled strategies to shield themselves from their consequences.

Facing the increasing growth of terrorism has become the major concern of many countries, which should not, however, ignore the domestic challenges generated by the unstable situation in the region, such as economy, social development and an expected wave of sophisticated crime, due to the fertile atmosphere in Iraq and Syria, which enabled many groups to operate and develop new skills.

Jordan, surrounded by crises in Iraq, Syria and the West Bank, is strongly affected.

The crisis in the West Bank is happening at a time the “two-state solution” is dead.

The major obstacle to any peace process is the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. But does Netanyahu represent himself only or does he represent a strong movement in his country?

There have been many failed attempts to achieve peace. Now many are looking at a realistic and applicable solution that would at least guarantee the Palestinians’ basic right to live normally every day.

Such an attempt requires key leading roles from regional players, like Jordan, that could discuss significant issues such as the borders, security and refugees.

The current crisis in the West Bank might have negative consequences for Jordan; the issue of refugees is liable to be the most difficult part in any possible solution.

Not granting the Palestinians the right of return is unacceptable to the majority of Arabs, so the issue of civic rights of the Palestinian refugees in host countries might emerge strongly soon.

The search for a practical political solution might lead to the old “Regan plan”, in which he bluntly said: “There is, however, another way to peace. The final status of these lands must, of course, be reached through give-and-take of negotiations; but it is the firm view of the United States that self-government by the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza in association with Jordan offers the best chance for a durable, just and lasting peace.”

In the facing of the multi-dimensional challenges, Jordan needs to adopt new strategies and political protagonists capable of anticipating challenges before they become real risks.
