How to face new waves of terrorism

Jun 19,2016 - Last updated at Jun 19,2016

Every day, the new tactics of Daesh prove more efficient in achieving two major goals — conducting terrorist attacks and piling pressure on the security apparatuses of many countries.

Since the declaration of “the caliphate”, security challenges around the world have taken on a new dimension, becoming an open global confrontation. However, the most important issue about this is the radical change in the way operations are being conducted.

In previous anti-terror fights, security agencies had to deal with high-tech sophisticated operations and to fight organised groups.

Today’s challenges have completely changed; it is not about the sophisticated operation anymore. On the contrary, attacks tend to take on a very simple form like stabbing or shooting, which makes it very difficult for security agencies to deal with them.

Moreover, there is no central group that security agencies can infiltrate. As a result, the threat becomes an unknown person without any obvious tracks.

The lone attacker does not communicate with any group, so from a security point of view he/she is a time bomb that nobody knows when or where it will blow up.

This new development is a radical change that has put security apparatuses and personnel under real pressure. Especially in terms of the plans and strategies that can be immediately adopted to face these new risks.

These multi-dimensional challenges should push all security apparatuses to work more on capacity building and enhancing professionalism, out of a comprehensive understanding of this new mode of terrorism and the high risks that could come from simple mistakes.

Despite its relatively crude methods, this new style of terrorism that targets all aspects of civic life is extremely harmful, for it can leave a high number of victims and casualties in its wake, rivalling the most complex, well-planned terrorist attack.

It is really challenging to prevent attacks like shooting on crowds, or stabbing. Even assaults on police, military or security stations and public places cannot be easily stopped.

Therefore, it is important to start thinking about new effective ways to face this danger.

Citizens should be involved in facing the new forms of terrorism; this requires raising public awareness to make ordinary citizens understand the level of risk and act with a great sense of responsibility.

The state should develop a professional portal to receive comments, observations and remarks from the public regarding any suspected issue they might observe.

Any piece of information might be critical today to save the country and protect its people from any possible terrorist attack.

At the same time, security apparatuses should work more on enhancing the rule of law in all aspects. Not focusing on some outlaw behaviour due to changing priorities could lead to serious problems, since the lines between criminal and terrorist groups have been blurred.

Therefore, the state should make sure to be present everywhere and act immediately against any violations, be they on the streets, or related to drugs, weapons, corruption or bullying.

No one should be above the law.

By doing this, the state can at least guarantee a positive atmosphere that can help in facing the challenges posed by a new mode of terrorism.
