The Arab world has spoken

Dec 10,2017 - Last updated at Dec 10,2017

The Arab League Council’s emergency meeting in Cairo at the level of foreign ministers concluded its deliberations on Jerusalem late Saturday evening with the adoption of a 16-point Final Communique.

The Arab foreign ministers’ meeting was convened upon the request of Jordan in its capacity as the rotating president of the Arab summit.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi was therefore the first Arab foreign minister to address the meeting and his introductory five major steps strategy to be followed by the Arab countries has set the tone for the Final Communique of the gathering having outlined a number of  specific measures that the Arab world should adopt in response to the challenges posed by US President Donald Trump’s recent speech purporting to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and deciding to relocate his country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in due course.

Trump’s words triggered alarm bells not only across the Arab capitals but also across the entire world.

The 16 policy directives contained in the Final Act of the Arab League included several basic Arab demands including the recognition of East Jerusalem as the capital of the future state of Palestine to be established  in the West Bank; taking immediate measures through bilateral and international contacts  to rescind once and for all Trump’s decisions and declare them null and void, through the adoption of a UN resolution to that effect; the unequivocal support for the two-state solution to the Mideast  conflict; calling on countries to recognise an independent Palestinian state along the pre-1967 boundaries with East Jerusalem as its capital and demanding that no other country  follow in the footsteps of Washington on Jerusalem.

The Arab foreign ministers also decided to stay in session and called for convening of an Arab summit in Amman as soon as possible.

The Final Communique took note of the impending emergency meeting of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation and pledged to cooperate and coordinate with its findings and resolutions.

Thus the Arab world has spoken and outlined its reaction to Trump’s decisions in no uncertain terms and expressed its solidarity with the Palestinian people to establish their independent state in the West Bank with East Jerusalem as its eternal capital.

The international community, no doubt, can be expected to support the legitimate Arab demands which comply with international law and related UN resolutions.

Obviously the Arab world will remain steadfast in support of its demands and maintain its vigilance until the dangers that ensued from Trump’s decisions are either reversed or globally viewed as null and void.
