Complementary work helps

Feb 21,2017 - Last updated at Feb 21,2017

In a meeting with heads of the Lower House’s main blocs, on Sunday, His Majesty King Abdullah called on the government and parliamentarians to work closely together for the good of the country.

At the meeting, also attended by Prime Minister Hani Mulki and House Speaker Atef Tarawneh, the Monarch also urged the two branches of government to cooperate fully in order to forge better integrated and positive relations between them.

The basis of this cooperation and coordination, the King pointed out, should be the Constitution, which draws a clear jurisdiction line between the executive and legislative branches of government, with the Cabinet remaining in the business of governing and the Parliament dealing with the adoption of legislation, when needed, as well as with supervising the performance of the government as a whole.

The King also called on all branches of government to prioritise economic development, with emphasis on combating poverty and unemployment.

The Lower House of Parliament at times seems to appear at loggerheads with the executive branch over certain domestic and foreign issues, and this impedes the progress of the country as a whole.

Given the problems that exist all around the country and the difficult domestic economic conditions, this is no time for dissension among the branches of government.

The functions of the three branches of government are complementary and not adversarial.

The loser from any disagreement, even if only perceived, is the people, as well as the stability and security of the country.

The Lower House of Parliament and the government need to work in harmony and together cooperate with the judiciary to ensure a smooth run and to project a positive image of the country.

Parliament is barely one year old, so people’s representatives have all the time to take action and correct things they think need to be put right.

And all three branches should put the nation’s interest above all else.
