Everyone is responsible

Jul 30,2016 - Last updated at Jul 30,2016

His Majesty King Abdullah is pinning high hopes on the next parliamentary elections due to be held on September 20, and wants the government to do all that it can to render them successful.

In this respect, the King’s priorities and the people’s priorities are one and the same.

Jordanians aspire towards parliamentary elections that would produce a Lower House that is aware of their woes and hopes.

Chairing a Cabinet meeting last week, the King called on the government to support the efforts of the Independent Election Commission in raising awareness of the Elections Law and the importance of holding free and fair polls in line with the international standards set in treaties that Jordan has ratified.

Obviously, there can be no successful elections without the participation of the greater majority of the people, voting for candidates that truly reflect their thoughts and aspirations for a better future.

The aim, the King noted, is to have an elected Lower House that is effective in performing its legislative functions and oversight role.

The people want nothing less than such a Lower House, comprising deputies who are well versed in the needs of their constituencies, including the bread and butter needs, and who are ready to work towards realising the national goals of the country as a whole.

But for the elections to be successful, voters must believe in their importance and cast their ballots responsibly for the candidates that they believe can represent them faithfully under the Dome.

Candidates are also expected to present realistic agendas and suggest policies that address their constituents’ concerns.

It is not only the responsibility of the electoral commission to ensure the success of the September 20 polls. It is the responsibility of all.
