Historic visit and solid basis for ties

Oct 11,2015 - Last updated at Oct 11,2015

His Majesty King Abdullah described the visit of Indian President Pranab Mukherjee to Jordan as historic, and it is in every sense of the word.

Receiving the Indian leader in Amman, the King said: “As you and I have discussed in our private discussions, this is built on the visit of His Majesty the late King Hussein to your country and by my visit to it.”

In other words, the present cordial relations between the two countries are built on a solid and long-standing foundation that go back several decades and continues to grow.

The Indian president’s visit to Amman for talks with the King assumes a historic dimension as well through the fact that it coincides with the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, a long time in diplomacy by any measurement.

India is the most populous democracy in the world; its strong democratic tradition and its respect for the rule of law distinguishes it from many countries and puts it at the vanguard of nations defending human rights and pluralistic democracies.

India has a large Muslim population, among the highest in the world.

Muslims look at India also for guidance on peaceful coexistence among faiths in a multicultural society.

On the occasion of this historic visit, Jordan and India decided to put the volume of trade between them at even higher levels.

India is already Jordan’s third biggest trade partner, after the US and China, and the Indian president suggested that the volume of trade and economic cooperation between our two countries can reach $5 billion within five years.

To cement this growing economic relation, the two countries inaugurated the Jordan India Fertiliser Company, at a cost of $860 million, the beginning of a hopefully steady growth in economic and political cooperation between Jordan and India.
